Informatics is vast. Work-life balance
Informatics may offer a more traditional work schedule, but it depends on the setting. Hospital-based roles tend toward Monday–Friday, with occasional off-hours during go-lives. Vendor, tech, and consulting roles often come with remote flexibility and project-based deadlines.
Sophia named the adjustment honestly: going from a 12-hour, task-based shift calendar to a typical 8-to-5 spread across long-running projects is a real shift in thinking. Some nurses love the autonomy and quiet; others miss the spontaneous connection of the unit. Both are normal.
Nursing Skills that Translate
You don't need a tech background — you need to recognize the skills you already use every day.

- Communication & SBAR — whether you're talking to a developer or a CMO, clear, concise communication is gold. Sophia noted it's one of the most underrated skills in the corporate world.
- Time management — managing your own projects and deadlines, not someone else's task list.
- Systems thinking — Sophia's standout point. Seeing how workflows, staffing, technology, and patient needs intersect downstream. If you've ever spotted how one broken process ripples through a whole unit, you're already a systems thinker.
- Process improvement — those bedside workarounds? Informatics lets you fix the root cause.
- Adaptability & advocacy — learning on the fly and speaking up at the systems level.
A note on data skills: Sophia was candid that there's a learning curve. It ranges from the basics (virtual meetings, calendar and email management, building a spreadsheet, using a pivot table) to the advanced (SQL, Python, R for data analytics). You don't need the advanced end to start — and YouTube, Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and even TikTok have free or low-cost resources to build these skills. Just as important: find your sources of truth. Sophia works in the CMS regulatory space, so knowing her trusted resources for rules and regulations is key.
How Much Experience Do you Need?
There's no official requirement, but most informatics nurses have a few years of clinical experience. It's less about years and more about what you've done with them. If you've joined an EHR rollout, led a QI project, been the unit's tech go-to, built workarounds, or trained staff — you're already doing the work.
Sophia discusses that an advanced degree is not required to enter the field. Sophia started with a four-week certificate, not a full degree, "because I wasn't quite ready at that time to dive into a whole another degree." Once you've confirmed the field is for you, then you can decide whether a certificate or degree makes sense.
Salary
According to Nurse.org's 2024 Nursing Informatics Salary Guide, informatics nurses earn between $61,000 and $136,000 per year, with most falling in the $85,000–$115,000 range. Hospital-based roles tend toward the lower end; health tech, government, and consulting roles — especially those leading large implementations — often command more. Advanced degrees or certifications (like ANCC's Informatics Nursing Certification), EHR rollout experience, and data familiarity all boost earning potential. And with AI and digital health accelerating, demand and compensation is expected to keep rising.
How to Get Started
Raise your hand.
- Get involved where you are: Become a super user. Join a unit council or QI committee. Volunteer for the next tech rollout. Sophia found that the more open she was to opportunities, the more they snowballed — and leaders start thinking of you first.
- Be the "yes" person: Be the early adopter and nursing champion on your floor. It takes little effort but pays off when new roles open up.
- Plug into the community: ANIA (American Nursing Informatics Association), HIMSS, and local nursing tech groups. Webinars and discussion boards count too.
- Find a mentor: Sophia's own path started with one gracious informatics nurse who answered her questions. Networking is key for exploring the field as well as landing a role.
